Get a Grip on Your Tires

While there are many critical components that make up your Audi, tires are perhaps one of the most important parts. Routine tire maintenance is important for optimal performance — not to mention the safety of you and your passengers. By having your tires rotated regularly, you can help prevent uneven wear, reduced fuel efficiency, poor handling and shortened tire life. To help protect your vehicle, be sure to make an appointment with us at our state-of-the-art facility.

How to Perform The Penny Test

Place a penny between the tread ribs on your tire. A "rib" refers to the raised portion of tread that spans the circumference of your tire. Tire tread is composed of several ribs.

Turn the penny so that Lincoln's head points down into the tread.

If the top of Lincoln's head disappears between the ribs, your tread is still deeper than 2/32 of an inch. If you can see his entire head, it's time to replace the tire, as your tread is no longer deep enough.

Tire Tips for Best Performance

Check Your Tire Pressure

Even if your tires are in great condition on the outside, improper air pressure will cause them to underperform or can even cause damage. By maintaining the recommended air pressure in your tires, you can help preserve their life and performance. There are various factors that can affect tire pressure, such as a puncture or cold temperatures. It's important to check your tires regularly and refer to your owner's manual for the correct pressure level.

Improve Fuel Economy

According to the United States Department of Energy, properly inflated tires can return an additional 3.3% to your vehicle's current fuel economy rating. On the flip side, if your tires aren't properly inflated, your vehicle's engine and related components are forced to work harder to get you to your destination. This can cause a noticeable dip in the fuel economy of your Audi. Also, inclement weather or adverse driving conditions can exacerbate the problem. To get the best fuel economy from your Audi, check the recommended PSI that's found inside the driver's door jam, not the number found on the side of your tire. Or, bring it to us, and we'll take care of it for you.

Balance and Alignment

Similar to how certain parts of your shoes wear down over time (depending on how you walk), certain parts of your tires can wear more quickly based on how your vehicle drives. The easiest and most effective way to prevent uneven wear is to have your tires balanced and aligned regularly. Despite the fact that the science and technology of tire manufacturing has advanced over the years, resulting in a reduced need for balancing and alignments, you still don't want to forget about these services.

Choosing the right tires for your Audi can help improve overall performance, giving you a better return on your investment.
